Career Focus leads to Academic Success
When she started the Dental Assisting program, Genesis was a junior in high school who never really cared about school or grades. Genesis says, "I just wanted to be with my friends and have fun." She knew she wanted to be in the dental profession, but the way she was acting wasn't going to get her far. Her teacher saw the potential in her and encouraged her to succeed. She started to focus and accomplish more in class. She made big improvement by the end of her first year and enrolled in a second year of the program so that she could complete the coursework.
The Dental Assisting Program prepares the student for employment as a dental chair side assistant and/or office assistant upon graduation. It also provides student with a good foundation for entering related areas such as dental assisting, x-ray technician, hygienist, dentist, and the continuation of a dental pathway. Instructional areas covered are terminology, dental anatomy and physiology, radiation-safety theory and lab practice, sterilization and disinfection to OSHA standards, chair side procedures, dental materials, dental laboratory procedures, and basic front office duties. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of completion, a California dental x-ray license, and an Infection Control certificate. Instruction includes 400 hours of externship in a dental office.
Genesis is now interning at a dental office and on her way to becoming a Registered Dental Assistant. The program has taught her to focus on herself and identify what she wants to accomplish in life. Genesis says, "I know that there will always be obstacles, but I now have the skills to overcome them. The ROP has given me the opportunity to make a career for myself in a profession that I love!"
