Student Success Story

Job Secured at ROP Dental Assistant Internship
Jackie began the Dental Assistant program at Baldy View ROP during her senior year in High School. She was behind in credits, had a negative outlook on school, and wore heavy make-up and gang attire. She enrolled with a friend who behaved in a similar fashion. They appeared to negatively feed off of each other. As the first semester wore on, Jackie's friend ended up dropping the class, leaving Jackie without a crutch.
As time progressed, Christine Thomas, the dental assisting instructor, noticed that Jackie was exceptionally bright and especially impressive in her skills performance. Jackie's attitude was also changing. Despite some positive changes, Mrs.Thomas was concerned that Jackie's unprofessional appearance would prevent employers from realizing the skills that Jackie had to offer. Mrs. Thomas met with Jackie in private and explained the importance of professionalism at school and in the workplace.
Little by little, Jackie started to change; her make-up softened, she dyed her hair a natural shade and she began working on her professional communication skills. Jackie was placed in an upscale affiliate office so that she could complete her community classroom hours requirement. The dentist/owner of the practice was so impressed with Jackie that he offered her a job! Jackie has been employed with this practice for three years now. Due to such successes, her employer continues to host Baldy View ROP students. Jackie currently helps Mrs. Thomas train students. After recently purchasing her first car, Jackie says that she is thankful that Baldy View gave her the chance to make something out of her life.
